CHAPTER SEVEN

Eight Years Ago

day 35 since capture

The shaking needed to stop. Shiloh had already gotten scolded once for nearly spilling a tray on the vampire guests last night. Master Benjamin was not going to tolerate her doing it a second time—and on the guest of honor, no less.

After what happened to Shauna, she didn’t want to end up in the dungeon. In her defense, she wasn’t used to having the golden eyes of a vamphyr fixed on her so intently. She’d only been at the estate a short while, and Master Benjamin had never addressed her or even taken a good look at her. He rarely ever glanced at his staff members to begin with, human or otherwise, unless it was to punish them for some mistake or another.

Lord Henry, on the other hand, seemed to find enjoyment in making Shiloh squirm whenever his eyes happened to meet hers, which he did often—and on purpose. Shiloh wished he would stop. She was only supposed to place the refreshments on the table for the two vamphyrs and hang around in case her Master needed anything. She wasn’t scheduled for a feeding for another week, but it seemed like Lord Henry had other ideas.

“What news of our brethren, Henry?” Master Benjamin asked, unwittingly shifting the other vamphyr’s focus away from Shiloh, who was presently pouring them wine into tall, fancy glasses.

“Rumor has it James may have found a successor,” the other vamphyr replied derisively, his ancient British accent evident. “My son mentioned it during my last visit there. Though, of course, nothing has been confirmed yet. It’s about time, don’t you think? The old geezer overstayed his welcome long enough.”

Master Benjamin grunted in response and waved Shiloh away. Mercifully, she retreated back to the corner of the room, away from Lord Henry’s prying eyes. Then, as she had grown accustomed to doing while on service duty for Master: she started daydreaming. Except that instead of her usual fantasies about getting out of this miserable place, her thoughts drifted in a more worrisome direction.

For the past week, she’d been too concerned about Shauna to construct happy scenarios in her head. Her friend had been released the day before and spent the night in the infirmary. Shiloh’s mind had jumped to the worst conclusions, but when she saw Shauna earlier this morning, she looked fine, physically speaking. She didn’t seem to have been harmed and was apparently healthier than ever.

The problem was that her spirit seemed to have been broken. She hadn’t even mentioned Rowan, and her musings about escaping were now completely silenced. Shiloh didn’t know how she could help, but since it had only been a few hours since her friend’s release, she was trying to be patient. Shauna would come back to her old self eventually. She had to.

“Did you hear me, little girl?”

Master Benjamin’s irritable voice brought her back to reality, sending her heart into a frenzied rhythm. Eyes wide, she bowed to him with supplication, quickly thinking up ways to avoid trouble.
